Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Kenya – Acclimatization at Mountain Rock Lodge

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi to the foothills of the majestic Mount Kenya. Upon arrival at the charming Mountain Rock Lodge, nestled on the western slopes of the mountain at approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, you’ll begin the important acclimatization process.

Spend the afternoon at leisure with optional activities including horse riding, fishing, or a guided nature walk through the surrounding indigenous forest. Enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere while preparing for the exciting trek ahead.

Day 2: Sirimon Gate – Old Moses Camp (3,340m)

After breakfast, enjoy a short drive to Sirimon Gate, crossing the Equator along the way before entering Mount Kenya National Park.

Begin your trek through magnificent indigenous forests alive with birdsong before ascending through bamboo forests and giant heather zones into the open alpine moorlands. As the landscape opens up, spectacular mountain scenery unfolds before you.

Arrive at Old Moses Camp (Judmaier Camp), your first overnight stop, after approximately 3–4 hours of trekking.

Day 3: Old Moses Camp – Shipton’s Camp (4,236m)

Today’s trek takes you deeper into Mount Kenya’s spectacular alpine wilderness.

Follow the beautiful Mackinder Valley, surrounded by towering peaks, dramatic cliffs, and unique high-altitude vegetation including the famous giant lobelias and giant groundsels that make Mount Kenya so distinctive.

Arrive at Shipton’s Camp, dramatically positioned beneath the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion. The stunning glacial scenery and resident rock hyrax create an unforgettable mountain atmosphere as you prepare for your summit attempt.

Day 4: Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) – Hall Tarns – Mount Kenya Bandas

Rise well before dawn for the highlight of your expedition.

Under a sky illuminated by countless stars, begin your ascent towards Point Lenana, the trekking summit of Mount Kenya. As the first rays of sunlight illuminate Africa’s second-highest mountain, celebrate reaching the summit and take in breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Kenya, with Mount Kilimanjaro often visible on the distant horizon.

After capturing unforgettable summit memories, descend to Hall Tarns for a well-deserved breakfast before continuing through the magnificent Gorges Valley. Along the way, admire dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, volcanic rock formations, and pristine alpine landscapes before reaching the comfortable Mount Kenya Bandas where hot showers and a warm log fire await.

In the evening, keep an eye out for elephants, buffaloes, and other wildlife that frequently wander near the lodge.

Day 5: Chogoria Route – Nairobi

After breakfast, descend through lush bamboo forests and pristine rainforest along the scenic Chogoria Route, widely regarded as the most beautiful route on Mount Kenya.

Meet your waiting vehicle before enjoying a relaxing drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon with unforgettable memories of conquering one of Africa’s greatest mountains.

Itinerary

Day 1. Nairobi – Mt Kenya
Morning transfer from Nairobi, arriving at Mountain Rock Lodge for lunch. Then drive to Sirimon Park gate (2600m). On completion ofpark entry formalities, begin a 3-4 hour hike through forest. Ascend 700m through the bamboo, rosewood and heather zones to Old Moses camp. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Camp. (3300m) (L/D)
Day 2.A long day leading to the base of the high peaks
Today’s trek is largely through the moorlands and the Mackinder Valley, with good views of the main peaks and a brief stopover for picnic lunch. Total walking time is approx. 7 hours gaining 900m in altitude. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Hut. (4200m) (B/L/D)
2. Maasai Mara
• Enjoy an early morning game drive at 6.30 am in search of wildlife.
• Return to the lodge for breakfast and visit a local cultural Maasai Village to learn more about this unique tribe that co – exists freely with wildlife.
• Return to the lodge and spend the day at leisure.
• Enjoy a game drive at 4 pm in search of wildlife.
• Dinner and overnight at Enkorok mara camp. (B/L/D)
Sirimon – Naro Moru Crossover
Day 3.Pre-dawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about 3 hours up steep scree slopes and across rugged rocks up to Pt. Lenana (4985m), the hikers’ summit. Then down through Lewis Glacier up to the Austrian hut to join to the Naromoru Track and descend for 2 hours to Mackinder’s camp for breakfast then have the rest ofthe day at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp. (4300m) (B/L/D)
Day 4.Leaving early, you gradually descend for 4-5 hours through the moorlands and the lower vertical bog up to the Met Station, from where you walk down on a wide dirt road leading to the Naromoru Park gate (2600m) where you meet our vehicle. You are then transferred back to Mountain Rock Lodge for a hot shower and lunch then back to Nairobi. (B/L)
